Just had some pictures forwarded to me taken during the May
Day holiday, the crowds are beyond description but here are a few photos
that give you a little insight into why it's better to leave China if you
can rather than stick around and deal with all the mass migrations here &
there... More pics
here

April 06
Nice Sunny Sunday....

It's rare to see the subway so empty - so here's what a nice
empty subway car looks like. Usually all I see is a field of black hair for
the entire length of it.....
Some pics from HK on Saturday
 Paul from
Germany sent me some funny pics he took while in Shenzhen, I'll be updating
the China Driving Exam soon, stay tuned
Came across some skateboarders in SZ, not a
common thing to see here just yet, nice to see teenagers in this part of the
world looking for ways to unnecessarily hurt themselves just like I did in
the USA when I was their age :)
Pic of our daughter by the obviously big
picture of Deng Xiao Peng in Shenzhen

Super Crowded Walmart - you shoulda seen how big the Frogs
were in the meat department! I'm telling you, they were HUGE!

Back to Beijing to see some old friends....had a great time
there, a little cold but Spring is in the air.... When you're going to visit
the Great Wall, only go to Mu Tian Yu - NEVER GO TO Badaling pass unless you
love crowds and sales people

Speaking of Crowds, it's unlikely I'll ever go back to the Forbidden City
it was absolutely packed when we were there...but you should try to go if
you haven't been there but go as early as possible....
Came across a pretty
interesting article on Shenzhen
On the factory floor: Inside China's
engine room
President Hu's meeting with George
Bush takes place against the background of the country's
relentless growth. Clifford Coonan reports from Shenzhen
on an economic miracle

Some more pics of Hua Qiang Bei Lu area on a Sunday

March 06

So......in case you're wondering where all the knock offs, grey market,
and "off the truck" stuff is sold - look no further.this place is called the
"Traders Market" and if you're averse to crowds and the smell of
perspiration, this ain't the place for you. But, if you're looking for North
Face knock offs and other name brand stuff, some legit, most not, this is
the place for you...Think of Ross Dress for Less in Hell and you're pretty
close.

< Dangerous Goo, I wouldn't have guessed otherwise.

So....yesterday was one of those days where the monotony of suburbia back
home starts to sound really appealing. It finally happened to me, didn't pay
attention to my
relatively new
cool digital camera...gone in sixty seconds, poof! I'm more ticked about
losing the gig sandisk card and lots of pictures I hadn't uploaded than the
camera itself. Anyway, just a reminder,
don't let your
guard down, this isn't Disney land. If that wasn't enough, we found
ourselves in the emergency room of the Beijing Peace Hospital later that
night so my wife could get some stitches in her foot - I could write a few
paragraphs on this but suffice to say it was a big reminder that if you get
seriously hurt in China, you're on your own.
Look both ways when crossing the street.
I need to get another camera so don't count on anymore pics for awhile.
If anyone has a recommendation on a point & shoot digi with excellent low
light resolution,
please let me
know.

These flat panel TV's blasting(!!!) Ads are becoming ubiquitous
and really annoying....in our little supermarket there are 15 of em (15!) as
well as one by our elevator...sign of things to come I fear.

Nice pagoda not so far from our house...never been to the top, way too many
stairs!
Really bored the other night, was surfing for the worst weather in
the world...

No wonder these guys aren't happy campers, what the heck is "Smoke" in a
forecast?

Another night in Shekou in an area called Seaworld, essentially lots of
restaurants & pubs surrounding a big landlocked shipped which has been
converted into a hotel, German Restaurant, and Microbrewery.

Mark was in town.....I know the picture isn't too clear face wise,
mental note - turn flash on, but for whatever reason, I like the way it came
out...

So, I remember being told a long time ago that the (Construction) Crane
was the national Bird of Singapore, well, it looks like those birds have
migrated north to China now. From our back window, we can count 10 cranes
dotting the skyline, they seem to be just about everywhere.

Someone just sent me some more driving pictures to add to the
CHINA DRIVER'S EXAM portion of this
website.
Wet roads, minibus with worn out breaks, bicyclist with a cell
phone....bad ju ju
So
in the States, Pizza Huts tend to be kinda lame looking restaurants with so
so pizza. There are two new Pizza Huts in town which look a hell of a lot
better than the ones I'm used to. What's up with that?

Snapped this on the way home from work on the side of the
highway....Ducks tied to the front of the Bike-ped were definitely not happy
campers!

In case you've been wondering what the SZ subway looks
like...US $.50 cross town
Apocalypse Now? The air was looking pretty grim for the last
month or so but we finally got a few showers and we can see a cloud or two
where I work, how long that'll last is anyone's guess.....
February 06

Sunday lunch & a stroll through the park....here's something you don't see
often - a person writing Chinese calligraphy on the sidewalk with water -
pretty interesting to watch - note the genius who decided to trample through
it.

Hua Qiang Bei Lu (Lots of shopping - clothes, computer, consumer
electronics)

Our buddy Mike (pictured here) was in town and we just
happened to take him to the most crowded place in Shenzhen - an area called
Hua Qiang Bei Lu where crossing the street and getting around is
always an adventure.
Happy
Valentines Day!
Surprisingly, Valentines day is incredibly (!!!) popular in China. Most
restaurants were grossly overbooked and there were a lot of unhappy couples
trying to find a fancy place to eat. We settled for the Hong Kong duck place
:)

Jesse
Warren
was kind enough to let me use one of his pictures of the Shenzhen Skyline
for a banner on this Link Page. Thanks!
Macau & Shanghai.....my in-laws were in town
doing a little sightseeing

 Now, this
might or might not be interesting to you, apparently, "Cricket
Fighting" was big in Macau until the early 1980's but not so popular
now, go figure....anyway, here are some pictures from a museum exhibit,
unfortunately, my photographic skills leave a lot to be desired....but
you'll figure it out I'm sure.
These three imortalized "crickets" Cricket Coffin - ahhh the agony of defeat
In NYC we call them cockroaches
10W-40 River

No, the river pictured above isn't in New Jersey! So,
in just
one day the "canal" near our office went from puke green to pitch black,
pretty scary, I'm pretty certain that it's more likely that life will be
found on Mars than in the canal pictured here. All part of being an
eyewitness to the Industrial Revolution in progress here....

January 06 So, my daughter has passed
through another "Rite of Passage," her first Tuk Tuk ride in Bangkok. What's
with these guys anymore, they insist on charging more than a normal taxi and
I always cave....anyway, we can check this off the To Do list....more on
Bangkok here...

We rendezvoused with my old buddy Don Johnson who's now working in
Bangkok, small world huh....?
So.....we
decided to avoid the Chinese New Year mayhem and get a little R&R on a nice
little island in Thailand named Koh Chang, if you're looking for a place
with nothing going on other than watching beautiful sunsets, this is the
place for you.....more on this here.

Hey, I highly recommend this website , the guy that writes it is
hilarious...definitely worth a visit! |

Don't know how I missed this site for so long but it's a great consolidation
of various blogs about living in China....anyway, the site is
www.chinabloglist.org

Happy
New Year....added a few new pics to the "China
Driving Exam," For those who are wondering, these are predominantly
pictures taken during my commute to Chang'An from Shenzhen.

December 2005
Well, we're midway through our second year in China and so
far, so good. We've made some great friends out here and everyday presents a
unique "adventure," there's definitely never a dull moment and always
something new to figure out, eat or discuss :)
Even Santa made it to Shenzhen this year....not too
shabby....
It's been a great year! Bye Bye 2005, we'll miss you...
Best Holiday Wishes to all who stumble across this
